I just spent my evening reading and listening and watching videos of music that I did not know existed. And now I know and there is no going back. This music speaks to me, it speaks for me and it becomes my voice. I appreciate you sharing this work.
I just paid for a substack subscription so that I could enjoy a playlist comprised of a favorite singer songwriter, Anne Briggs. I am irritated and dismayed that the streaming options consist of the notorious personal data scraping programs, spotify & apple, along with another 2 options requiring a sign up. Please get a system in place so that subscribers can stream directly from this webpage. I am considering terminating my subscription ... very disappointed ...
Hi. Streaming any music on-demand from this platform is far from straightforward and it's not free; Substack have no licensing agreements in place for this. To place music audio content directly on this platform (just for the UK where we are based) requires licensing from PRS and the recording rightsholders (for example, the record label that owns that track) to obtain a direct licence. I'm sure you can appreciate the difficulty in obtaining a license from every record label in a playlist...it just wouldn't happen.
This is why we use two methods: 1) Streaming of playlists via a DSP (we provide playlists via Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Qobuz and with YouTube for some), and 2) Mixcloud: They are licensed and have agreements in place with record labels. So you know, this post was not a paid post; it was published as a free post. We do say that we use DSPs and Mixcloud for our audio mixes and playlists. If it were possible to obtain an all-encompassing Podcast license, believe me, we would, but it's not at the moment for the reasons stated above.
So you know for the future, where in a title we mention a Playlist, this is provided via a DSP (like this one); where we mention a Mixtape, it's via Mixcloud.
